Harbor's Gomez Named State Cross Country Runner of the Week

Los Angeles Harbor women's cross country racer Sherlyn Gomez was recently named a 5CTCA State Runner of the Week after she placed first at the South Coast Conference Preview meet held at Long Beach's Heartwell Park on August 30.

A sophomore ran away from the field in 19:36.9, finishing more than two minutes ahead of next runner, who happened to also be a Harbor teammate in sophomore Keona Mataalii (21:44). Harbor won the meet with a score of 33 points, edging El Camino (36) and beating Long Beach (52).

Only 21 runners from four colleges participated in the 5-kilometer race, but Gomez stood out as she is following her All-South Coast Conference First Team performance as a freshman when she placed seventh at the SCC Championships.

In the SCC Preview men's 4-mile race, Harbor placed third as a team (El Camino won the team title) with the top Seahawks' harrier being freshman Victor Macias II in 14th (23:27.5). First-year racer Kenneth Servin was 17th in 24:14.5 while also placing in the top 20 were fellow freshmen Alex Hernandez in 19th (24:18) and Carlos Aguiar in 20th (24:39).

The Harbor teams, coached by Geoff Skarr, who directed a 3C2A state champion women's team in 2018, will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 at the Golden West Central Park Classic in Huntington Beach. The women's race is at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by the men's race.
